Metaphysics is a core concept of philosophy which seeks to explain the nature of reality. How do we reconcile the duality of our perception of the material and the immaterial— the mysterious relationship between the mind and body? Metaphysical arguments also tend toward cosmological arguments about the origins of existence.
Time is a huge factor when it comes to the nature of reality. One interesting aspect of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is its narrative structure. It causes we viewers to question where it all began and allows us to share the characters’ confusion with and celebration of their memories. Without generalizing, as a species evolves in order to become better fit for its environment so does a person in a relationship. However, don't people also evolve in a way much different than Darwin's conception of the word (or perhaps the way in which some of us were educated to believe he conceived the word)? Memories can play an important role in the way we perceive the world and a play an active role in guiding the choices we make on a daily basis. Does the past make the reality of our present lives sustainable or unbearable? In what ways does the present reflect our past?
